Dorothy Day

Dorothy Day’s life (1897-198 bore witness to her firm conviction that, even in the face of overwhelming need and injustice, individuals have the power to affect change in the world. This belief is reflected in a quote from one of her autobiographies Loaves and Fishes, from a section in which she claimed that a sense of futility is one of the greatest evils of our day. As she reflected on her life’s work fighting for social justice, Day said:

InContext: Martin Luther King Jr.

In his article, “Nonviolence and Racial Justice,” published on February 6, 1957, in Christian Century, a weekly religious magazine, Dr. King wrote: “True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force—tension, confusion or war; it is the presence of some positive force—justice, good will and brotherhood.” He explained that the era of Plessy v. Ferguson created what he called “a new kind of slavery,” which, although outwardly peaceful, was internally experienced by African Americans as inferiority, insult, and exploitation. This so-called “peace” was, in fact, a “negative peace,” one devoid of justice.

InContext: Congressman John Lewis

The past two decades in America are punctuated by more activism than any time since the Great Depression: people protested for women’s rights in the #metoo Movement, against wealth inequality in Occupy Wall Street, and campaigned against violence and systemic racism. These movements, along with many others advocating for a more just society, were widely broadcast, catching the attention of legendary activist leaders. The late Congressman John Lewis (1940 – 202 was so inspired by this generation’s desire to improve America’s condition that he visited the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., one day before being admitted to the hospital; it was his last public appearance.

InContext: Barbara Jordan

Born in Texas during 1936, Barbara Jordan, the first black congresswoman from the South, grew up during the Jim Crow Era. Barbara was known for her tenacity, determination, and oratory skills since she fought zealously for civil and human rights. Even during her youth, Barbara demonstrated her skill in public speaking by winning a national debate contest in 1952 as a high school student. She continued to hone her advocacy skills at Texas Southern University by becoming a member of a debate team. After graduating from college in 1956, Barbara finally attended her first unsegregated school, Boston University Law School, as one of only two women in her cohort. The timing of her law school career is especially noteworthy.
